"After!" replied Isabella, with some hesitation; then abruptly left the major's side to exchange a few words with Dido. Jen, as was natural, looked after her with a glance full of doubt and suspicion. Notwithstanding her love for Maurice and her expressed desire to avenge his death by hunting down the assassin, she appeared to be anything but frank in the matter. "Don't say another word to me tonight," she warned, "or I'll call Miss Jinny. I'm going to sleep." Judith nodded. "We found it!" she went on, growing more excited as the end approached. "We found it, all in little bits, along with other stuff from Doris' waste basket!" Anyway, I don't know when I ever was so glad to see anybody as I was when Mrs. Johnson came in the front door.
